peine-de-los-vientosThe Peine de los Vientos (literally “Comb of the Winds”) is a work of art made by the sculptor Eduardo Chillida and located in the shores of the Concha bay, at the end of the walk that carries its author’s name, in the San Sebastian city (Donosti).

It was made in 1977 in collaboration with the engineer José Maria Elósegui and the architect Luis P. Ganchegui, who was in charge of retouching the cliff to create an outstanding public place by means of passable graderíos covered with Porriño granite.

It is the fifteenth one of an ancient sculptural series which the artist worked with the idea of the limits of the human experience; it was not an ordinary one. That work had been conceived to be moved to scale and to mark one of the Corners of the Earth, in the most western part of the bay of the Concha, on the foot of the Igeldo de San Sebastian.

It is formed by several terraces which have different heights, covered with paving stones made of pink granite, communicated by stands and stairs. Three sculptures are placed in the rocks of the cliff.

The set complements itself by means of a set of pipes which lead the air that is driven by the waves to a series of orifices that produce a peculiar sound.

The sculptures are formed by several arms of rectangular section that interlace themselves creating a jumble that seems to brush the wind. They integrate perfectly into the environment creating such a game between the sea, the wind and the arts.

Chillida distributed his work all over Spain, but leaving in his hometown his masterpiece which has already turned into an indispensable visit of the capital from Donosti.

It is a different and very innovative sculpture.
