A latest report on the Internet penetration in Spain and new categorical failure. In this occasion, the information revealed by the Institute for Economic Studies (IES) shows that either the broadband and the access to the Internet in Spain continues without improving, and it has not reached the European average percentage of homes with Internet services.

According to this report, Spain, as well as some other countries, does not manage to reach the European average rate for Internet access in the home, specifically it remains in the twentieth position with a 54 % of penetration opposite to the average 65 % of the EU concerning the twenty-seven ones and it is lagging behind if compared to other nations like Hungary (55 %), Latvia (58 %), Poland (59 %), Lithuania (60 %) or Slovakia (62 %).

Although Miguel Sebastian, the Minister of Industry, and Francisco Ros, Secretary of State for Telecommunications and the Information Society, have congratulated themselves in several times about steps forward in the Spanish broadband, the piece of information published by Eurostat, which were taken into consideration by the Institute for Economic Studies (IES), exposed the true nature of our country.

After reading this piece of information, Juan E. Iranzo, General Director of the IES, has stated that Spain has to get its act together in order to facilitate and widen the Internet access for homes and business environments.
The broadband service is slow and expensive, which made the Internet usage to be lower than other members from the EU. Internet penetration is so far from being the same like the ones from those developing countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands and Norway. Besides, differences have become noticeable during 2009.

That is the reason why, the IES considers that Spain should facilitate and widen the usage of Internet for homes, as well as for small and medium-sized service providers in order to increase their output.

According to information provided by the Telecommunications Market Commission (TMC), Telefonica is the dominant operator and also the most expensive all over Europe, this fact puts a natural stop to the ADSL service agreement in those areas where an ex-monopoly is only offered.
